Urgent Call to Action: Save Our Precious Pawlett Hams

The Pawlett Hams, a treasured expanse of 320 hectares of vibrant fresh water wetland and grazing land, is under imminent threat. EDF, under the guise of environmental responsibility, has announced plans that will irreversibly flood and destroy this area to facilitate their new project, Hinkley Point C. This land, equivalent to over 320 football pitches or nearly two Hyde Parks, is not just a number—it's home to protected species, a sanctuary for local farmers' cattle and sheep, and a cornerstone of our community's heritage and environmental diversity.

Why We Must Act Now

EDF's justification for this ecological and economic vandalism lies in their need to offset fish ingestion by their cooling systems. Instead of pursuing innovative or environmentally sound solutions, EDF has chosen a path that will breach sea defences, create vast tidal creeks, and obliterate an internationally protected freshwater grassland. Their proposal risks the well-being of badgers, deer, newts, water voles, otters, and numerous bird species, including breeding lapwings, owls, and buzzards as well as hundreds of cattle and sheep.

The Stark Reality of EDF's Plans

By EDF's own optimistic calculations, the destruction of Pawlett Hams will yield a negligible return—merely enough offset 10% of the damage caused by their intake system. This paltry benefit pales in comparison to the loss of a rich and thriving ecosystem and the decimation of local farming livelihoods. EDF's proposed compensation makes no space for the wildlife that will be displaced and little compensation for local farmers given the natural resources that will be lost. They offer no real remedy for the loss of irreplaceable habitat and farmland amidst growing pressures from housing, industrial development, and transportation improvements.

The Impact on Local food producers

Among those affected will be a beloved local milk and egg producer, which stands to lose a significant portion of its grazing land, a key part of the wildlife reserve that makes Pawlett Hams so special. The loss threatens not only the farmer's existence but also undermines our community's access to high-quality, locally produced food.

This is more than an environmental issue—it's a fight for our community's soul, our way of life, and the preservation of our natural heritage. We call upon all concerned citizens, environmental advocates, and supporters of local agriculture to join us in opposing EDF's destructive plans. Together, we can protect Pawlett Hams for future generations, ensuring the survival of its wildlife and the continuation of our farming traditions.
